New MA in Person-Centred Education
I could talk passionately about all the reasons why this new post-grad degree at Sussex University lured me, finally, back into ‘formal’ learning. Reasons both internal and external.
Suffice to say it sang out loud and clear. Right place, right time.
Speaking of which, it’s time for bed, so will just post a short excerpt and leave a .pdf for the course outline for those that like to look further into such things.
What is Person-Centred Education?
Person Centred Education puts people at the centre of the educative process.
Our current systems of schooling have drifted too far away from this belief about the centrality of broad and deep notions of educating the whole person and this programme seeks to recentre and rearticulate a more holistic approach within a 21st century context.
Through ways of working in a learning community as well as through research and academic study this Masters Degree will both draw on and extend our knowledge and practice of person centred education in a range of organisational settings.
Will be writing lots more about it and within it over the next 2 or so years as the learning journey continues.

… as you can see, evolving steadily from this point. I guess the categories created for the posts will be one obvious way to access updates on this.

Just had a quick look at the blog and thought it fascinating – I am delighted to be able to read such an open account of someone’s learning journey.
The blogs I have looked at before have been rather more distant and more ‘professional’ in a slightly cool way so it was great to be in touch with the humanness of yours.
A number of things struck me from your blog that will surface again as you start on the learning journal section of the MA of the next few weeks
Reggio Emilia was mentioned quite a lot by our tutor so it will be a great link to what you
are doing.
Composure was another – how we compose our stories and who they are composed for.
Audience is another important consideration – how we change our story/our selves depending on who is listening.
The public and private self was an interesting consideration for me when writing my journals – what sort of self did I want people to see – was it the true self and is there such a thing as the true self
Now you have got me started …. Fascinating stuff!
Thank you for the personal comments – I have found the people I have worked with on my courses at university stimulating academically but also very life-affirming as well (just as much an important part of the learning journey as the research)
Best Wishes and looking forward to reading more of the blog

Thanks Rose. Your feedback and input on the learning biography stuff is really helpful. I have to say, I sometimes struggle with my choice to be fairly open, informal and non-academic in my style of writing. It’s a very conscious choice, to do with being accessible to the widest possible audience. I guess there is the potential to be considered not ’serious’ enough, or objective enough. But I have real doubts about whether anything can ever be objective as we are always decoding the world through our own filters. Yes!. It’s great to be affirmed - Libby

[…] Just contact the lovely Dr Scherto Gill if you want to know more, or contact me. There are many other posts on my Learning blog if you want to find out a little bit about where it has taken me so far. Like this one. Indeed the MA underpins much of what we are going with Authentic Blogging and the courses we are running. […]
